For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy place by the high priest as an offering for sin, are burned outside the camp. Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people through His own blood, suffered outside the gate.
Hebrews 13:11-12
You've heard the expression, "Learning the think outside the box". The whole book of Hebrews is an effort to get those of the Old Law to "think outside the box." To the Old Covenant Jew, everything had been in the box. In the Law of Moses, in the Holy of Holies, in the Temple, in the priestly tribe of Levi, and inside Jerusalem. Jesus needed them to think outside of their box. Jesus went to the cross outside of the city. He was a high priest forever from outside the tribe of Levi. His sacrifice put an end to the worship with sacrifices of bulls and goats. Unless the Jews could learn to think outside their box, they would miss Jesus. All of us have had our thoughts shaped by some sort of box. Sometimes those religious precepts and convictions can cause us to miss Jesus too. May we allow God's Word to lead us out of our box to the cross of Jesus, and into His true will for us

As for man, his days are like grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourishes. When the wind has passed over it, it is no more, and its place acknowledges it no longer.
Psalm 103:15-16
One time my mother was in a nursing home for rehabilitation after surgery. She loved the flowers we brought her, but she hated to watch them whither and die. It reminded her that our days are like the flowers. We may be beautiful today, but soon we whither and die. I brought her a bouquet of artificial flowers. She really liked having them around, as they reminded her that the beauty of those flowers are like the soul and spirit of man. They never die, they always look great, and like the lovingkindness of God, never fails nor fades. Let's hold on to the lovingkindness of God. With it, we will never really die.

If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. I Corinthians 13:1
Great teachers are mostly rated by their ability to speak The "silver tongued orators" usually get plenty of praise and a big following. God reminds us that if we speak eloquently without love, it amounts to nothing but noise. To become a teacher, it helps to enunciate properly. Someone once joked that you need fill your mouth with marbles, and begin to speak. Every minute or so, you spit out of marble. Finally, when you've lost all your marbles, you can be a teacher. With no marbles and no love, you can teach, but you are just noisy gong, or a clanging cymbal. God calls on us to speak the truth in love. May we fill our lives with His spirit, fill our minds with His knowledge, and fill our hearts with love. Then motivated by His grace, we will have a message that will bring people to Jesus.

Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me--to keep me from exalting myself! II Corinthians 12:7
What was this "thorn in the flesh" that was given to Paul to torment him? Was it a weakness, an insult, distress, persecution, difficulty, of what? Whatever it was, Paul prayed that God would remove it from him, but God has a different answer. Instead of removing the thorn, God told him He would use it to perfect His power for the work ahead. Further, the grace that God would give him, would be enough. I'm glad the scripture doesn't tell us exactly what the thorn was for Paul. If it did, I wouldn't be able to apply it to my thorn. We all have a thorn in the flesh, and God's power is sufficient to overcome it. Whatever mine is, God is more. With this in mind, whatever shortcomings I have, I can be confident that He will use them to complete my ministry for Him, and that is enough.

No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other You cannot serve God and wealth. Matthew 6:24
Our spiritual choices are not made at Burger King. We can't have it our way. We must choose to serve God, or serve the devil. We must choose to walk in light or darkness. We cannot be both on the narrow way and the broad way. We must love one and hate the other, be devoted to one and despise the other. It is the popular way to choose both masters depending on the circumstances. Sometimes we love and serve God, and other times we want to love and serve the devil. We would never readily admit that we hate God, but when we choose to serve the devil, if fact, we do. Let's make the right choice. Choose the master that will give us eternal ife in heaven, and give God the glory.

Now Joseph, a Levite of Cyprian birth, who was also called Barnabas by the apostles (which translated means Son ofEncouragement), Acts 4:36
In the early days of the church, the Christians were under a great persecution. Even though they had the miraculous power of the Holy Spirit, and the apostles, everyone needed encouragement. There was a man, named Barnabas, who fueled the revival in Jerusalem with encouragement by word and deed. Later they would send him to the Antioch church to encouragement them to remain faithful to the Lord. When the apostle Paul was rejected by the other apostles, it was Barnabas that encouraged them to accept him. Encouragement is the fuel of revival. We may have the Holy Spirit dwelling in us, and know the Word of God from start to finish, but without encouragement, it may come to nothing. Look around and see who needs a boost among you. A word fitly spoken can motivate others to do great things for the Lord. One of the greatest compliments that can be paid to us, is to be labeled "Barnabas". Let's seek for a Barnabas for ourselves, and then be one for someone else. Let's fuel a revival and God will get the glory.

But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil. Hebrews 5:14
I went into our new hospital's cafeteria the other day, greeted by this sign. "Unattended children will receive an espresso, and a free puppy" To a kid, extra caffeine and a puppy to play with sounds very exciting. To a parent, a kid bouncing off the wall, and a puppy may be a real problem.
Message received. Watch the children. Scripture encourages us not to be like children in our thinking, but to be mature. Learning by having our senses trained to know the difference between good and evil. To the immature, many things seem to be fun that are dangerous. As we mature, we see that danger. This is the reason we to spend time to get into the meat of God's Word, and grow in spiritual maturity. I life lived without discernment, is doomed to failure.

Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. I John 3:15
There is absolutely no circumstance where we have the right to hate someone. God equates hate with murder and we cannot have eternal life abiding in us. We certainly have the right to hate evil things that ruins people's lives. We must hate the evil things that people do, but we must separate the sin from the sinner. Jesus said He hated the deeds of the Nicolaitans in the book of Revelation. He hated the deeds, not the people. Jude called us to hate the garment that is polluted by the flesh, but to restore the one who has been polluted, snatching them out of the fire. Proverbs tells us that to fear the Lord is to hate evil, and lists many things that God hates, but He never hates people. Mankind is God's creation, sin is the devil's work. Let's love the Lord's work and hate the devils.

A highway will be there, a roadway, And it will be called the Highway of Holiness. The unclean will not travel on it, But it will be for him who walks that way, And fools will not wander on it. Isaiah 35:8
The Bible has more to say about holy living than anything. God wants us to be holy as He is holy,, and live a life separated from worldliness. It is amazing to me how people can plan ahead to go from Fat Tuesday to Ash Wednesday in just one day. From a day dedicated to drunkenness and reveling, followed by a holy day. I can imagine that those in the world think this kind of religion is pretty
hypocritical. Jesus calls his disciples to die to sin and rise to walk in a newness of life. We are not called to repeated Fat Tuesdays and sorrowful Wednesdays. Let's put ourselves in the narrow roadway that leads to eternal life. On The Highway of Holiness, the redeemed, and the ransomed are walking with joy and gladness. Let plan to get on that road and stay there. Our GPS is God's Word. Turn it on.

And He said to him, " 'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.' This is the great and foremost commandment. "The second is like it, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' Matthew 22:37-39
On Valentine's day you can see lines of condemned men waiting in line to buy overpriced flowers, so they can keep themselves out of trouble. They have a poem of instructions, "Love me sweet, love me tender. Get me roses, not a blender. " The purchase is not so much out of love but out of fear of what will happen without the purchase. Some great love, huh. It reminded me of Sunday morning at many worship services. Lines of condemned men and women, waiting to get in to keep themselves out of hot water with God. The worship is not so much out of love, but out of fear of what might happen if they don't come. Some great love, huh. Is that all there is to our relationships with God and one another? Not doing good moved by love, but a defense motivated by fear. Let's learn to love with all our heart, soul, mind, all the time. That kind of love casts out fear, and puts us in the winners circle, at home and with God.

But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ. I Corinthians 11:3
A lot of men spend a great deal of time finding Bible verses about submission. They use these verses as a sledge hammer to beat women into the joy of submission. If a man wants a woman to be in submission, he needs to model submission in his life. When a husband lives a life submitting and yielding to Christ as his head, he will provide a model of submission in his house. When we love Christ as He loves us, and when we love our wives as Christ loved the church, submission becomes a joy, not a burden. In fact, none of His commandments are a burden under that kind of love. If we are looking for faithful followers, become a faithful follower. God has the order for us. With humility, service, and submission, don't demand it, model it like Jesus did.

You believe that God is one, you do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.
But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless? James 2:19-20
There is a difference between believing in God, and have faith in Him. The true meaning of faith is a trusting relationship that moves us to obedience and action. The demons are believers, but they certainly are not servants of God. They tremble at the power of judgment of God, but do not bow before His mighty power. The devil wants us to believe that faith is a only a feeling. God asks us this question. If we say we have faith, but have no works, can that faith save him? God says that kind of faith is useless, dead, and will not save us. We will know we have the kind of faith that saves when we obey, and exercise that faith in obedience to Him.

Grace for your spirit
But if I say, "I will not remember Him, or speak anymore in His name," then in my heart it becomes like a burning fire, shut up in my bones; And I am weary of holding it in, and I cannot endure it. Jeremiah 20:9
Jeremiah had an awful preaching job. He had a mission to save Judah and Jerusalem, but his people really didn't want to hear his message. In fact, they didn't like him very much either. He was a laughingstock, he was mocked, and reproached by his own people all the time. His life would have been a lot more fun if he just didn't care anymore. If he would have just "watered down" his messages, life would have been easier. He couldn't do it. The message of God, the condition of his people, and the impending disaster, burned in his bones. He could not hold it in. Silence was far worse than the persecution of ministry. The apostles mirrored that life under their persecution, when they said they could not help but preach and teach His Word. How about us? What is the fire that burns us? The fire without that keeps us from teaching, or the fire within that moves us to ministry?

By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother. I John 3:10
If we were arrested tonight for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict us? It is obvious to people whether or not we are children of God, whether we are practicing sin, or practicing righteousness, whether we or not we love our brothers? Far too many people who bear the name of Christ, walk in this world in complete anonymity. Would we be willing to let strangers guess whether or not we are Christians by the way we live? A policeman arrested a woman at a stop light for throwing a fit, and screaming at another motorist. Later, when she was released, the policemen told her the reason he arrested her. With her multiple bumper stickers about Jesus, "What would Jesus do", "Honk if you love Jesus", and "Follow me to Bible school", the policeman assumed that the car must be stolen. What do people assume about us?

Jesus answered and said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again;
but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life." John 4:13-14
When Jesus met the woman of Samaria at the well, she had the way to get the water for Him to quench His thirst, and wanted to help. Jesus had the way to give her the living water of eternal life and wanted to help her. Jesus explained that His living water would cause her never to be thirsty again, and she was excited about getting some of that water. God has given us access to that living water in His Son Christ Jesus. We not only have the water, but know the way to get that water to others if we are willing to help. When I was a kid, my great grandmother had a pump in her back yard. The water was good and cold, but you needed to prime that pump every time. After you drank your fill, we would leave a little water in the bucket for the next guy. With that water, the pump would yield water quickly. In our Christian journey, are we thinking about living water for the next guy? May our life yield His water to prime the pump for another.

But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil. I Thessalonians 5:21-22
God has a ministry in mind for all of us. He wants all of us to be His disciple, obey Him, and help others walk in His light. As Jesus give us His Spirit to walk after Him, the devil constantly displays the deeds of the flesh to ruin our discipleship and destroy our ministry. No matter how faithful we think we are, there are three steps here we must follow in every decision of our lives. Examine everything carefully. Commit to hold fast to the good, and stay away from every form of evil. The devil cares deeply for our Christian walk and our ministry and he wants to ruin it. He can make evil look good, so we will choose the wrong things if we aren't careful. Time spent in God's Word and in prayer gives us a perspective to make better decisions. May we all make a renewed commitment to find God's view in all things.

Again He said to me, "Prophesy over these bones and say to them, 'O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD.' Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones, 'Behold, I will cause breath to enter you that you may come to life. Ezekiel 37:4-5
Ezekiel was God's prophet in the Babylonian captivity. God's people were in bondage and as good as dead. Did they have any hope of release, renewal, and return to their promised land? How could they have hope? God showed them the value of dry bones. A vision of bringing those dry bones back to life right before their eyes. The bones jumped together, skin grew, and breath was given to them. This word from the Lord was their message of future deliverance. In our world, without God, we are lost in sin and in bondage to the devil. Is it possible that we could be released, renewed, and restored to the Lord? Will He bring our dead bones back to life? We must hear, believe, and obey the word of the Lord. He will give us the direction for our salvation. Are we listening? Will we hear?

Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16
Deep down inside, we know that when we draw near to God, He will draw near to us. Most of us just don't think we need Him that much, so we stay away. They say that when the Titanic was going down in the North Atlantic, the orchestra was playing music on the deck to help calm the people. As the orchestra played "Nearer, My God, to Thee", I can imagine that song took on a whole new meaning. As thousands looked at the face of death, the thought of their nearness to God was on their minds. They weren't thinking about the talent of the musicians or the pace of the song. They were thinking about God and eternity. When we sing that hymn in worship, what are we thinking about? Are we the ones that would be rearranging the chairs on the Titanic? Hymns are designed to help us draw near to God. Let's draw near and see how that works for us.

I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. John15:1-2
Jesus is the vine, we are the branches. When we abide in Christ and He is us, we will bear much fruit. Our lives will be changed for the better, and we will bring others to Christ. Christ will constantly be pruning us, cutting us back, and disciplining us to bear this fruit. Is this a surprise to us? Have we been going to church for a long time and have missed this experience? Are we committed to Christ, and content with the lives He has given us? Do we look forward to the discipline of the Lord because we know it will make us better disciples? If we aren't living like a branch in Christ, we need to recheck our connection to Him. We cannot bear fruit without that connection. If we aren't a fruitful branch, we will never have anything right to say about the vine. It is time for a fruitful check up.

Now there were some Greeks among those who were going up to worship at the feast;these then came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and began to ask him, saying, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus. John 12:20-21
These Greeks were truly God seekers. They had forsaken their worldly religions to worship as Jews. seeking God and His favor. They were present for the feast of Passover to experience more of His will. Now with the news of Jesus, God's Son, in their presence, they sought an audience to know more of God's will in their lives. While some were doubting, and others accusing, these men boldly stated, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus". The weren't disappointed. Jesus gave them the words of eternal life. "Hate your life in this world and keep it to eternal life. It was a welcome message for them. They had already put their lives behind seeking the will of God. Are we God seekers, or are we hoping God finds us just as we are?
