I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God inChrist Jesus. Philippians 3:14

The prize in the gospel of Jesus Christ never lost its appeal to Paul and the early disciples. They endured trials and temptation to continue their quest to mature and grow in Christ Jesus. The more they were with it, the more they treasured it. When I was a little kid we yearned to get a box of Cracker Jacks. There was a prize inside that we just had to have and loved it. As we grew older, that prize in the box started to look like a piece of junk. This happens to many in Christ. The prize of Christ is glorious in the beginning, and then as we more forward, the shine comes off the prize. Soon we have cast it aside for something else. Let's hold onto that treasure, that pearl of great price. The best part of the prize is yet to come.

Grace for your spirit
For it is just like a man about to go on a journey, who called his own slaves and entrusted his possessions to them. To one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another, one, each according to his own ability; and he went on his journey. Natt 25:14-15

Through the grace given to us by God, in a way we are all the same, and in a way we are all different. We are all servants of the same master. We have all been entrusted with His possession while He is away. We will all be expected to give an account of our work with His possessions. The ways we are different is determined by the talents and gifts that we possess. In this story, one had five, one had two, and the last had one. In that sense they had different opportunities to serve. We all have different work, different gifts, but the same accountability. Let's put effort in our service rather than working on our excuses.

Grace for your spirit
Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Philippians 2:4

Many people dedicate their lives to "climbing the ladder of success". Often in our zeal to reach the top, we use people as steps on the ladder. We don't serve people nor make many friends, but we're not concerned because the only goal is getting to the top. When we reach the top in this way, usually we find that our ladder has been leaning against the wrong building all the time. We find little joy and satisfaction in our goal. When we lean our ladder against the kingdom of God, our steps will be attained in service and caring of others. Keep looking up at the top of the ladder. We should see God, and our feet should be squarely in His Will. That is the real ladder of success.

So He came to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph, and Jacob's well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. John 4:5-6

Jesus traveled into enemy territory for anyone from Judea. His apostles left him alone as they went to find food. It a place where a man from Judea would be vulnerable, and the woman He met there that day was surprised. She was surprised to see Him, and even more surprised that He spoke to her. His rest was very productive. He taught this sinful woman about living water, and she went and brought the whole city out to meet Him. If we are going to be productive in leading souls to Christ, we often will have to go into enemy territory. We will have to make ourselves vulnerable and be brave to reach the lost for Jesus. It would be nice if they all would meet us at church, but they won't.

On an appointed day Herod, having put on his royal apparel, took his seat on the rostrum and began delivering an address to them. The people kept crying out, "The voice of a god and not of a man!" Acts 12:21-22

Herod was a ruler in Israel, and his power and glory went to his head. The people flattered him for his royalty and power, so goodness would come to them instead of anger. A "god" was a title he could live with, or could he? While he was working against God's will, he himself was taking all the glory. That night he was stricken with worms and died. It was evident to the people that he was not a god, but just a man. The difference between Herod and God was, that God never thought he was Herod. May we never set ourselves up to be some sort of god. The long term results are always a disaster.

But like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, "YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY." I Peter 1:14-15

God does not bless us just to make us comfortable, happy, handsome, or rich. God calls us to Him so we can be like Him. Through Jesus, we can share His holiness, and it will change our behavior. The equations is simple. God is holy, and we will be holy when we become like Him. In God's eyes, when we are pure, we are rich, handsome, happy, and comfortable. Let's seek contentment in God's eyes, instead of our own.

When they heard this, they quieted down and glorified God, saying, "Well then, God has granted to the Gentiles also the repentance that leads to life." Acts 11:18

When the other apostles met Peter after he had taught and baptized a houseful of Gentiles, they were not happy. Peter related his vision from God and how God has directed him to go. When they heard the overwhelming testimony of Peter, they could do nothing but agree with him. They said they believed, but did they really mean it? Time would show that they could not refute Peter, but they really weren't convinced. They continued their prejudice and separation from the Gentiles. How about us? Are we converted to God's way or just giving Him lip service? Do we mean we are willing to follow God's will, or do we just say it? Let's say it, mean it, and do it.

Therefore if God gave to them the same gift as He gave to us also after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God's way?" Acts 11:17

After the apostle Paul's heart and mind was changed toward the Gentiles, and after he had enjoyed the conversions and baptisms of all in Cornelius' house, he had someone else to convince. The apostles had not experienced Paul's vision. They had not seen the Holy Spirit work. They were still living in the shadow of their rules to stay away from the uncircumcised. Paul was using his keys to the kingdom on them this day. If he could open the door in their thinking, they could serve the lost in a new way. Do we have any doors we need someone to open? Of course we do? Let's not find ourselves standing in God's way.

Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him. Acts 10:34-35

When Cornelius and his household were baptized, they were the first Gentile converts in the New Testament. However the conversion of the Gentiles was not the only conversion in Acts 10. The first one took place up in Joppa and it happened to the Apostle Peter. Before the vision God gave Peter, he would have never considered leading these souls to Christ. God dealt with him and showed him a new way to look at all people. God had promised Peter the keys to the kingdom, and this vision was the key that opened that door to the Gentiles. We should never believe that conversion is a one time event. Conversion is a never ending process that continues to open new doors for our obedience and service. We need to let God work on all of us today. He has also given us a key to open doors. Let's think outside our box, and get outside our box for Him.

So I sent for you immediately, and you have been kind enough to come. Now then, we are all here present before God to hear all that you have been commanded by the Lord." Acts 10:33

What are we missing in bringing a great revival into our lives, homes, and churches? Cornelius immediately responded to the direction of the Lord. He sent for a man of God to instruct them. He worked to gather all his friends and relatives together. They were all ready to hear what God had to say. They weren't just there, they were present in mind and spirit. There have been many times in school and church that I was there, but I certainly wasn't present. Cornelius, his relative, his friends, and the teacher were present, and a great revival took place. Which of these are we missing in the formula for revival?

Do not be deceived: "Bad company corrupts good morals." I Corinthians 15:33

Sometimes we think we are ten feet tall and bullet proof. We think we can do anything, and go anywhere and not be affected by those around us. God encouraged us not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers, and it can happen before we realize it. Hang around anything long enough and we can learn to accept it. There used to be an anti drug slogan, "Just say no". I added to that, "Just say no and run". Let's make a new commitment to walk in the light, and have no fellowship with darkness. Light can become darkness quickly when we are living with a dim light. Let's not be deceived. Let's draw souls out of the darkness, instead of joining it.

What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be! Romans 6:15

Have you ever heard the phrase, "It is easier to get forgiveness than permission"? It means when we want to do something that we know is wrong, and we know our requests will be rejected, we just don't ask. Later, we can ask and be forgiven. Romans gives the Christian instructions on that topic. Now that we are not under law but grace, is that they we should choose to live? NO. If that is our choice, we are still living by the law, and we will be judged by law. The grace of God that forgives us, is also designed to change us and transform us into His likeness. We know His grace will forgive us, now let's allow that grace to change us into wanting to do right.

He who profits illicitly troubles his own house, But he who hates bribes will live. Proverbs 15:27

Throughout Proverbs the Bible reminds us that the love of money really is the root of all sorts of evil. It warns us that wealth gained dishonestly will dwindle and fly away like an eagle. Love of money will trouble our homes, and lead us to do illegal things. If we study idolatry in the Bible, we will soon see that idolatry and false god worship is fueled by greed. It is not enough to know this in our head, we must apply it in our hearts and lives. While Solomon was writing the wisdom of God for all of us, was he learning anything himself? He gathered in 700 wives, with their treasures and their idols. Before he knew it, his house was in trouble, and so we he. Let's make a commitment to be upright and honest in all our dealings. May we be content with the things that come from our one and only God.

Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven. Luke 10:20

If we need to prove where and when we were born, we can go do the court house of the right county. There our name is recorded. It proves our citizenship and our age. We have a spiritual birth record too. Revelation tells us that there is a "Lamb's Book of Life". It shows the names of the ones who have born again into the kingdom of God. Our name proves our citizenship and is our passage into heaven. We can rejoice about the victories we have in this world, but nothing is greater than knowing our name is written down in heaven. Rejoice.

For if a man comes into your assembly with a gold ring and dressed infine clothes, and there also comes in a poor man in dirty clothes, and you pay special attention to the one who is wearing the fine clothes, and say, "You sit here in a good place, and you say to the poor man, "You stand over there, or sit down by my footstool,"have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judgeswith evil motives? James 2:2-4

Many churches adopt a "We Care Program." The assumption is that the church cares about people, all people. As people are drawn to such a program, too often they find out that the church cares, but only about their image. They care about people who can give money to build their buildings, and give the church a good image of smart, intelligent, people. Those kinds of motives kill the spirit of the needy and kill the church too. This kind of partiality is sinful and will never build a church.

And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils Mark 1:34 KJV

The word "divers" is used in the King James Version, as a word for various or different. Jesus and His disciples healed all the various kinds of diseases and spiritual sicknesses they found. I heard an old preacher years ago, referred to these "divers diseases" in a different way. He said when it is time for worship, people "dive" into their weekend activities. When it is time to go to gospel meetings, they "dive" on the sofa to watch TV. When there are needs to be met for the church, they "dive" into their hobbies. "Divers" diseases keep us away from church services, gospel meetings, and meeting the needs of others. "Divers diseases" will always plague the church until we find a deeper commitment to the cause of Christ. Let's' allow Him to heal our "diver's diseases."

Be of sober spirit, be on the alert Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. I Peter 5:8

One time two championship wrestlers were put into a cage. No one could get out of the ring or get thrown out of the ring. It was a fight to the finish. We are in such a match with the devil. We are in a cage with someone who seeks to devour us. We might want to run, but we cannot. If we are sober and alert, we will soon realize that there will be no victory for us one on one with the devil. Fortunately, we have a silent, invisible partner in the ring with us. We don't' have go one on one. We can't get out, but with His help, we won't lose. Thank you Jesus. With Him in the ring, we don't have to get out to win.

To the angel of the church in Sardis write: He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars, says this: 'I know your deeds, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. Revelation 3:1

A preacher took a new job at a church that was dead. He wanted to spark some interest, so he put an announcement in the paper about the death of a formerly active member of the church. He didn't include the name, so on the appointed day of the funeral, all the members showed up to see who it was that had died. At the end of the service the casket was opened and people filed by to see who the dead person might be. Each looked into the casket and left shocked. The preacher had placed a mirror in the casket. When they looked at the dead member, it was them. Let's not just be church members living on a name, let's come alive and be Christians.

For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. II Corinthians 5:1

We live on the poor side of town near a hospital and a university. Both these institutions buy all the property they can, then tear the houses down for more expansion. I know what it is like to live in the path of those threats to my house and property. Where will I go when the wrecking ball comes for me? For years I have had to give those worries to the Lord, or they would drive me crazy. We don't have to have those worries about our earthly lives. We know our earthly tents, our bodies, will be torn down, but our new house is ready. When you know your new house is ready, it takes away all the pain. Enjoy it.

Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never prevails. Habakkuk 1:4

Habakkuk is singing the blues, complaining to God about his situation. His preaching is going nowhere, and he wonders why God isn't doing something. His people refused to honor God's commands, and the results were destructive. With the Law paralyzed and ignored by the people, how would righteousness ever win? It cannot. The same is true today. When God's Word is ignored, and paralyzed, the end result is destruction. We are facing the erosion of our lives and freedoms, and ultimate destruction. Let's cry out to God for help. If we will all return to God's will in our nation, we will be able to say "Happy 4th" and and mean it.

Grace for your spirit For many walk, of whom I often told you, and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the cross of Christ, whose end is destruction, whose god is their appetite, and whose glory is in their shame, who set their minds on earthly things. Philippians 3:18-19

Paul is encouraging Christians to follow the example he has set before them. He is pleading with them to act and talk as citizens of Christ's heavenly kingdom. His heart was broken over the hypocrisy in his presence. People who were claiming to be Christians, actually were enemies of the cross. Since they had set their minds of earthly things, their appetite had become their god. The same is true today. We might expect this kind of behavior in the world, but not in the church. Let's set our mind on the kingdom that will endure forever instead of our appetites and shame.
