Grace for your spirit November 30, 2010

Grace for your spirit.
Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary. Galatians 6:9

Doing good for others is not our personal vending machine for good stuff. We don't insert good deed, then yell and kick the machine if we don't get our prize. The true doing of good is a result of God working in our lives. We shouldn't lose heart in doing good, because we already have our reward. When we are committed do good without the bargain of additional rewards, we won't lose heart, and we will not grow weary. We need to be thinking about others, then God will richly bless our lives of service and sacrifice.

Grace for your spirit
The one who guards his mouth preserves his life. The one who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. Proverbs 13:3

When I was in elementary school, I stuttered badly. Nothing helped, but one day it just went away. Somebody told me that my mind was working faster than my mouth. That's funny because now I seem to have the opposite problem. Often my mouth moves faster than my mind. It might take a muzzle, it might take a sock, but let's find a way to guard our mouth until our brain is working. It may keep us from ruin and preserve our life. Certainly it will bring glory to God for our lives.

Grace for your spirit
And He did not let him, but He said to him, "Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you." And he went away and began to proclaim in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed. Mark 5:19-20

After Jesus had healed the demon possessed man, he came back to thank Jesus and go with Him. Jesus told him he could thank Him in a more meaningful way by going home and spreading the good news of what great things Jesus had done. Being thankful to God is a two way street. First we need to return to Him and express our gratitude, then we need to go spread our thankfulness to those who need Him. This Thanksgiving weekend, if we are blessed with the opportunity to go home and gather with loved ones, keep this story in mind. Let's go home and and report what great things the Lord has done for us. Have a happy thanksgiving.

Grace for your spirit
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:6

In this direction to a peace free from anxiety, note the place of being thankful. The thanksgiving goes with the prayer. Too many times we pray, and then if we get what we want, we might be thankful. That plan not only extends anxiety, if often is not a cure at all. The prayer of faith is the prayer of success. Let's find our peace with God, believing that He will meet our requests before we ask and receive. Let His answer be the right answer for us. There is the peace.

Then Jesus answered and said, "Were there not ten cleansed? But the nine--where are they? Was no one found who returned to give glory to God, except this foreigner?" Luke 17:17-18

One day Jesus healed ten men of a dreaded terminal disease called leprosy. One of them was a Samaritan and the other nine were of Judea. Why do suppose the foreigner was the only one that thought to say thank you? Could it be that the other nine felt like they had the healing coming because of who they were? When we receive a wonderful gift from above, do we have the attitude of gratitude, or the feeling that it is too little, too late? We need to humble ourselves before our mighty God. When we do, we will be filled with thanks. In everything, give thanks, for this is the will of God.

Then Peter said to Him, "Behold, we have left everything and followed You; what then will there be for us?" Matthew 19:27

Peter's weak faith apparently needed a refresher course. He was so busy following and working for Jesus, the promises of Jesus must have slipped his mind. Jesus didn't rebuke him. He reminded Peter that he would have dominion in the kingdom, a hundred times more in this life than anything he had given up, plus eternal life. Sometimes we need to take another look at scripture to remind us of God's promises. Unless we keep the promises of God clearly in mind, we might just get discouraged and quit. Do we need a refresher course?

They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them Your servant is warned; In keeping them there is great reward. Psalm 19:10-11

What can be priceless and worthless at the same time? The answer is an unused Bible. God's Word is more valuable than gold. God's Word is sweeter than honey. God's Word as a source of great reward=priceless. God's Word not read, not followed=worthless. The Bible is still the number one selling book in the world, but unless it is read and followed it looses its value. Let's search the scripture. There is gold in those pages.

Grace for your spirit
For this is the message which you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another;not as Cain, who was of the evil one and slew his brother And for what reason did he slay him? Because his deeds were evil, and his brother's were righteous. I Jn 3:11-12

Why did Cain kill his brother? Why couldn't he master the sin that was crouching at his door? Now in First John, God explains it to us. Cain did not love his brother. Cain was of the evil one, the devil, and that made his deeds evil rather than righteous. We may think we aren't capable of doing anything like Cain did, but watch out. When the devil gets hold of us, we can lose our love, and evil can take over our lives. Guard against any such takeover by staying close to the Lord.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6

When I am taking a trip to an unknown place, I want all the help I can get. I get directions, note landmarks, print out MapQuest, and program a GPS. Give me the best road and I will enjoy the trip much more. In my walk of life, I want the best road, and the road straight to my destination. As I travel I wish to consult with the one who knows the way and knows the pitfalls. God's Word is my Spiritual GPS/Mapquest. I don't want to leave home without it.

Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. Eph 4:29

What did your mother always tell you? "If you can't think of something nice to say, don't say anything at all." This takes it a little bit farther. Now, think of something nice to say, Something that will build up those who hear us. Something that meets the need right at that moment and will fill others hearts with grace. And let's not limit that kind of talk just at certain times, like when the preacher is nearby. Let's make it a permanent lifestyle. Jesus is always nearby.

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope. I Thessalonians 4:13

It is healthy for the Christian to grieve, but we should never do it in the same way as those who have no hope of eternal life. The good news of this passage is that those who have died in Christ, will be raised in the last day and be with the Lord forever. Our loved ones have just separated their bodies and their spirits for a while. They are even now, enjoying the blessings of the Lord. We often comment that we have lost a loved one when they die. Actually if we know where they are, we really haven't lost them. Don't be uninformed. Rejoice in the Lord.

This is the day which the LORD has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Ps 118:24

The Lord has done His part. He has made a day for us to enjoy life and glorify Him. Now it is our part. We need to decide to rejoice and be glad in the day He has given us. If we do not rejoice and be glad, it is unlikely that we will enjoy the day, and more unlikely that we will praise Him for our gift. It is not a matter of what happens to us today. Rather, it the choices we make to enjoy it.

And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed." Genesis 12:3

This was the promise given to Abraham over 4,000 years ago. It was the beginning of a family line that would bring Jesus to the earth to redeem us. For most of those 4,000 years there has been an argument on whose family God was talking about. Did we miss the word ALL. The promise was for all the families of the earth. Redemption in Jesus is for all. It's not a Jew/Greek thing. It's not an east/west thing. It has no national or ethnic boundaries. Let's not be building walls, where God has built a bridge.

Yet now I urge you to keep up your courage, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship. Acts 27:22

The Apostle Paul was a prisoner on the way to Rome sailing with 275 other men, and the voyage had been awful. The storms threatened to sink the ship and everyone had given up hope of survival. Paul was told by an angel that they would all make it safely if they stayed on the ship. They all survived the trip. We travel in stormy waters in the ship of God. God promises if we don't give up the ship, we will all survive. Like in Noah's time, Paul's time, and our time, the only salvation is in the ship of God.

The one who guards his mouth preserves his life; The one who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. Proverbs 13:3

Ever heard the term, "Open mouth, insert foot"? If it was true, most of us would be hopping through life on one foot. Sometimes we think, I wish I had said that, but more often we think, I'm sorry I said that. Jesus said the things that come out of the mouth are the things in our heart. The best way to change our mouth, is to charge our heart with the Spirit of God dwelling in us. That is the best guard we can have.

I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see thegoodness of the LORD In the land of the living. Psalm 27:13

David spent a lot of time on the run from King Saul. He had been anointed to be the future king of Israel, but it seemed like a long time coming. The light at the end of his tunnel were the promises from God. He trusted that the day would come, and it sustained him in his troubled time. Every day is not going to be a wonderful happy day for most of us. The promises that God has given us for His blessing should lift us up and keep us from despair. Let's all believe that we will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. It will make today brighter too.

Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these Galatians 5:19-21

The fact that these are deeds of the sinful nature is evident. They are always obvious when we see them in the lives of others. How come they are so hard to detect by us when we have them? Can we determine when we quit walking after the Spirit and start walking after the flesh?. Others can see it, but the devil doesn't want us to see it. We need to listen when we are warned of our drift into this style of life, and get back on the road led by His Spirit.

Behold, I will throw her on a bed of sickness, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of her deeds. Revelation 2:22

One of the churches in Revelation was tolerating immorality. They were allowing the teaching of immorality to poison their spiritual lives. God had called for repentance, but they refused. Jesus said their bed of immorality would become their sick bed. Sick bed for the prophetess, and a sick bed for those who tolerated and participated in the false teaching. Sin bed to sick bed. Be sure our sins will find us out. Unless we repent, our sins will be exposed and our punishment will be sure. Let's listen to Jesus and repent.

Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in the truth which is present with you. II Peter 1:12

When we hear something that is important to us, and something we really need to know, we can't hear it too much. God often repeats things to us that are very important. It is a danger sign when we complain that the teaching is too repetitious. Too often that means we don't want to hear what God has for us. In the time of great persecution, Peter not only wanted to remind us of the important things, but also stir us up every chance he had. May we let God's word continually stir us up. We haven't overcome yet, and we need all the help we can get.

Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord. Romans 12:1

Revenge does not belong to us. When we take it, we are stealing from God. When we conspire to take it, we are robing devotion from God. It is not unusual to hear people in the world talking and taking revenge to get even. That we can expect, but it is a horrible experience to hear it from a Christian. May we make not provision for revenge in our minds. When we love as God loves, and walk after His Spirit, we will leave the wrath to the one who knows the hearts of men. That is God and not us.
