Grace for your spirit
Therefore prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. I Peter 1:13

Sports teams often use the words; Step up, come to play, bring your "A" game.  It is time for us to commit those words to our Christian walk
I will do more than belong, I will participate.
I will do more the believe, I will practice.
I will do more than care, I will help.
I will do more than be fair, I will be kind.
I will do more than forgive, I will forget.
I will do more than teach, I will inspire.
I will do more than be friendly, I will be a friend.
2015 is before us.  I will decide, I will resolve, I will

The beginning of wisdom is: Acquire wisdom; and with all your acquiring, get understanding.  Prize her, and she will exalt you; She will honor you if  you embrace her.  Proverbs 4:7-8

Proverbs says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. That truth is much more than an academic exercise.  It is just the beginning. We need to continue to acquire it, prize it, embrace it, and make it special.  All great relationships need this commitment, and so does the application of wisdom.  Let's ask for wisdom and understanding, and God will give it to us.

The beginning of strife is like letting out water, so abandon the quarrel before it breaks out.  Prov 17:14

A story is told about a Dutch boy who was walking beside a dike when he noticed the dike was leaking through a small hole.  He stuck his finger in the hole to keep the leak from getting bigger and bigger. His quick action saved the village from a flood.  Strife between people can be just like that.  Strife is a drip that can turn into a flood.  Before it does, let's take action to plug the strife and save a destructive quarrel. Let's be alert and ready to stop strife before it gets destructive.

The angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most  High will overshadow you; and for that reason the Holy Child shall be called the Son of God Luke 1:35

This announcement to Mary was certainly a surprise, but by faith she treasured it in her heart and was ready to obey.  From our perspective it was a fulfillment of prophecy that was on the way since the Garden of Eden.   The coming of Jesus is the focal point of the whole Bible.  We too accept the news by faith.  Will we treasure these things in our heart and be willing to obey?  The life we choose will be the answer to that question.  May it help us all have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Jesus answered and said to them, "Go and report to John what you hear and see;  the blind received sight and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.   Matthew 11:4-6

When John the Baptist was having a bad time in prison, he begin to wonder if he was following the right man.  This was the message Jesus sent to him.  Even on our bad days, we need to always remember that every good and perfect gift comes from above.  The good things that happen in this world are the result of Jesus coming down and changing our world.  This is the reason for every season.  May our faith and praise never waiver.

O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together. Psalm 34:3

For too many, the glory of the Lord is lost in the "fine print".  It is the duty and joy of Christians to magnify the presence of the Lord, exalt His name, and make it real to the world that has missed His true meaning. As we behold the glory of Jesus in our walk, may that vision exalt His name and bring joy into the lives of others.  Anytime is a good time, and no better time that in this season of joy.

For this reason we have been comforted.  And beside our comfort, we rejoiced even much more for the joy of Titus, because his spirit has been refreshed by you all.  II Corinthians 7:13

I finally decided what gift I want for Christmas.  I would like to have my spirit refreshed, my heart filled with joy, and be comforted by the faithfulness of my Christian brothers and sisters in Christ.  If I could feel a renewed zeal, and zest for Christ that lifts us all, that would fill my stocking.  Let's all make a renewed commitment to put Jesus first in our lives, and see what God will do for us.

Those who sow in tears shall reap with joyful shouting.  Psalm 126:5

It would be great if everything in life was fun, fun, fun.  Many times the difficult things we must do in life, produce the greatest results in the long run.  When we quit at the first sign of trouble, little will be accomplished.  Let's commit to put out the extra effort to sow bountifully.  When we reap bountifully, there will be joyful shouting and celebrating.

Therefore, do not be partakes with them (sons of disobedience) for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light.  Ephesians 5:7-8

We  have two clear cut choices in life.  Walk in the Light as He is in the Lord, have fellowship with Him, or walk in darkness and cling to the ways of the world.   Whichever way we lean, we will eventually partake of it and become like them.  God is the God of light.  The devil is the god of darkness.  If we are the Light of the Lord, there should be no gray areas.  Walk toward the Light.

Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it.  Proverbs 3:27

A few weeks ago, I conducted a funeral for a friend who passed away at age 90.  Her birthday was the Sunday before, and the church decided to have a party for her.  Touched by the gesture, she wrote a nice note of thanks the next day.  By the end of the week, she was gone.  It was a touching reminder to do good while you can.  Tomorrow is not a guarantee.  Say thank you today.

But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Hebrews 12:8

God wants us to live a holy, submissive life as His children.  When we fail to acknowledge Him as our Father, we will reject His discipline. When we refuse to humble ourselves under His mighty hand, we will bear the burden and punishment.  Rebellion has no place in the family of God.  If we want to be children of the King, we will have to learn to partake of His discipline.  The life we will enjoy in His house, will be worth it

So you too, when you do all the things which are commanded you, say, 'We are unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done.'  Luke 17:10

Most of us feel the need to be praised and rewarded for every good thing we do.  The praise makes us feel we are earning a good relationship with the one we serve.  The true Master slave relationship is not like that.  We serve as slaves without rights, and without praise to serve the one who sustains us.  With God, our good works is not to attain His favor, but His favor motivates us to good works.  With God, our good works are not to be saved, but because we are already saved.
Anything we accomplish, we ought to have accomplished.  May this thought strengthen our faith when nobody says "thank you."

Though the fig tree should not blossom and there be no fruit on the vines, though the yield of the olive should fail and the fields produce no food, though the flocks should be cut off from the fold, and there be no cattle in the stalls, Yet I will exult in the Lord, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation.  Habakkuk 3:17-18

It took a lot of time and soul searching for this prophet to reach this conclusion.  When he saw the coming catastrophe he wanted to blame God and accused God of making a mistake.  When he finally realized that "The Lord is in His holy temple and all the earth should be silent before Him."  His journey of faith led him to peace.  Where are we on our journey?  When we humble ourselves, we too can find peace and satisfaction even in trouble times.

You shall love the Lord you God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind;  Luke 10:27
All is an interesting little word.  It means the whole time, the whole number, the greatest possible, every, any, nothing but, or dominated by. God gives us life and breath for 168 hours each week.  What percentage of that time do we give to the Lord?   All would be 100%. One hour a week figures to .06% of the time.  We all fall short at times, but certainly all should be our goal for the One who has given us our life and breath.  Let's turn up the burner.  We need more steam.

Riding in cars causes 20% of all fatal accidents.  17% off all accidents do occur in the home.  14% of all accidents happen to pedestrians walking down the street.16% of all accidents happen traveling by plane, train, or ship.  Only .001% of all deaths occur in worship services in church, and these are related to previous physical disorders. Hence, the safest place for you to be at any time is church.  Go to church.  It could save your life and save your soul as well.   :)

But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment.  For by your words you will be justified, and by your words  you will be condemned.  Matthew 12:36-37

Yes we are saved by the blood of Jesus, not by our good works and right words.   But may be never forget that our words reflect who we are and what we are.  A new creature has a new heart, a new mind, and a new mouth.  Our words and our works snow that we are justified or condemned.  We shouldn't need a muzzle to hide our words from people.  Let's be found walking and talking in a worthy manner.

And I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh.    Genesis 9:15

In 1923  Japan was hit with a devastating earthquake.  U.S. President Calvin Coolidge and the American Red Cross immediately sent ships with millions of dollar in aid.  The Japanese government sent a cable to the U.S. saying ,"We will never forget."  Eighteen years later, December 7, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor plunging the world into World War II.  Thankfully, God never forgets His promises.  The many promises He has made, He also remembers and always keeps.  Let's learn to remember and be thankful that we can trust in Him always.

My children, with whom I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you.  Galatians 4:19

The process of becoming a disciple is a continuing process.  Like a natural birth, first their is conception of Jesus as Lord.  Next, is the growth of our faith, followed by being born again by the water and the spirit.  But the process does not end there.  As we learn to walk after the Spirit, yielding ourselves to our Lord, Christian maturity develops until we are complete.  That takes work and mentoring.  When Christ is fully formed in us, we look like  Him.  Let's keep laboring and growing.

But when he came to his senses, he said, "How many of my father's hired men have more than enough bread, but I am dying here with hunger!"  Luke 15:17

The dictionary defines common sense as sound practical judgment that is independent of specialized training.  Many degrees in specialized areas will not insure that we have any common sense.  No matter what knowledge this runaway son possessed, or how much money he had, his most treasured asset had been instilled by his father; common sense.  Unfortunately, he had lost it when he ran from home and ended up broke in the pig pen. Common sense didn't come from his rowdy friends or from the pigs. His common sense returned at the same time the picture of his father returned.  Both of those led him home.  What is leading us?  Is it taking us home?

He whose ear listens to the life-giving reproof will dwell among the wise.  Proverbs 15:31

Everyday in life we have a variety of messages that come to us.  Some are wise, some are foolish, some are life diminishing, some are life giving.  It takes discernment to block out the messages that will  hurt us, and drink in the messages that will benefit us.  Sometimes those life-giving reproofs are less than pleasant, but when we listen, learn, and apply them, wisdom will rule our lives.

All the ways of a man are clean in his own sight, but the Lord weighs the motives   Proverbs16:2

It is easy for any of us to set our own standards of right and wrong, and what is dirty and what is clean.  With those standards, we can justify any sort of ungodly lifestyle.  We will be far better of in the long run to find what the Lord seeks, and set our standards to meet His standards.  When we get our motives right in the sight of God, our lives will be like God wants us to be as well.

But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said," Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me."
Luke 10:40

Jesus certainly cared for both of them.  He cared for Martha's work, and he cared for Mary dedication to learning.  They wanted Jesus to care, but Jesus would like them to care also.  Did Martha care about the feelings of her sister?  Did Mary care that Martha was laboring and unhappy?  It doesn't look like it.  Let's learn to take notice.  Do our actions and our words hurt other people?  Do we care and are we willing to make changes?  We want Jesus to care, and Jesus wants us to be like Him.

Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.  Acts 2:38  KJV

Remission is a word that is a common theme in the Bible.  In the later translations the word has been replaced by pardon or forgiveness as it relates to sins.  When we  hear the word remission today, it is almost always relating to cancer.  It is great to hear when our family and friends announce that they are in remission.  Even better, when we are referring to our eternal spiritual standing before God, to announce that are sins are in remission.  Forgiven, pardoned, and walking after the Spirit, never to have a relapse.

Learn to do good; Seek justice, reprove the ruthless, defend the orphan, plead for the widow.   Isaiah 1:17

The people of Isaiah's time were not doing the work they should do because of their unfaithfulness.  The prophet admonished them to turn around, learn to do good, do what was right, work with the ones who were ruthless, and help the widows and orphans.  Hundreds of years later, the Spirit gave the same words to James, when he was encouraging God's people back on track.  He described pure religion as visiting the widows and orphans, and keep oneself unspotted from the world.  It would seem to be a timeless lesson that applies to us as well.

Woe to those who deeply hide their plans from the Lord, and whose deeds are done in a dark place, and they say, "Who sees us? or who knows us?"  Isaiah 29:15

One of the things that helps keep us on the "straight and narrow", is remembering that we are never away from the presence of the Lord. He sees us, knows us, and is intimately acquainted with all we think and do.  We can forget about hiding in the darkness, because darkness and light are the same to him.  Since He is everywhere, He is already where we are going.  Woe to us if we rationalize our thoughts to commit evil acts.  His Spirit is always with us.

But we do not want you to be uniformed, brethren, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope.  I Thessalonians 4:13

We all have two journeys we must take.  The first journey is physical, earthly and limited.  The second journey is eternal.  How sad it is, that most people know little or nothing about that second journey.  They find themselves standing at the gravesite of their loved one, grieving because they have no hope about the future.  Oh, they’ve heard talk about heaven and hell, but think little of it.  This should not be so among believers.  Believers need to be reminded that Jesus is coming for us all someday.  Whether we live until His return or die sooner, we will all be with the Lord eternally.  Let’s comfort one another, because it is the only comfort.

Yet those who wait on the Lord will gain new strength;  they will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.  Isaiah 40:31

Did you ever watch an eagle fly?  They seem to coast with little effort, almost never flapping their wings.  Their flight allows them to stay far above their enemies, and be secure.  They are able to find warm currents of air that continue to lift them up.  God has that same lift for us when we are wore out.  When we are tired and weary, and our enemies are closing in, let’s look to the Lord.  His grace can give us new strength, and lift us up almost without effort.  Wait on they Lord.  We sure can’t fly be ourselves.

God honored them all with love and protection.  On this Veterans day, may we bring the uplifting message of encouragement to those just starting their journey and those about to end it.  Let's take the time to say "thank you" for all the sacrifices.

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ and do walk not according to the flesh, but according to the spirit.  Romans 8:1

1) Do what is right
2) Love kindness enough to show mercy
3) Walk humbly with God
No matter what gifts and talents we have, these are the principles that make them work.  Justice, mercy, and humility cannot be substituted by anything.

So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own.  Matthew 6:34

Today is all we really have on this earth, and we often let aggravations and stress ruin it for us.  We know we aren't suppose to worry, and that is just one of the things worries us.  If we seek first the kingdom of God, most of the things that worry us would take care of themselves.  If we could have the faith to live in "daytight", compartments with our past forgiven, our future assured, and enjoying our present, we really could be much happier.

Moses had been a shepherd in the land of Midian for forty years.  His shepherd's staff was his tool. When God gave him his commission to return and lead his people from bondage, God empowered him for success.  The staff in his hand became the staff of God.  God used that staff to free His people and lead them to the promised land.  Whatever we have in our hand everyday to earn our living, has the potential to become an instrument of God.  Let's get going with the power of God.

How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard?  And how will they hear without a preacher? How will they preach unless they are sent?  Romans 10:14-15

How,  how, how, how, indeed.  We know the answers, and the answer is us.  We must build the bridge between the mystery and the faith.  Philip answered the how from the Ethiopian, when he said, "How can I understand unless someone guides me." And the bridge for him was built.  When we are sent to preach Jesus, people can hear, believe, call on Him and and be saved.  That is the answer to "how."  Now the question for all of us is "when" will we answer our call?

For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world--our faith.  I John 5:4

Jesus told us to take courage when we have tribulations, because He had overcome the world and we can too.  When we believe that Jesus is the Son of God, we all can overcome the world.  Throughout the book of Revelation, the Lamb of God is pictured as the one who overcame the devil and the world.  The Bible promises us that we too can overcome and receive the crown of victory in Jesus.  Let's keep our eyes on Jesus, let our faith work and never give up.

But we speak God's wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory; the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for it they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory;
I Corinthians 2:7-8

While on the cross, how could Jesus say "Father forgive them for they don't what they are doing?"  Because they indeed did not know what they were doing.  When anyone walks away from Jesus, it is basically because they do not understand the mystery, and don't know what they are doing.  May we all get the message and help others to get it too. When we do, let's turn around for the forgiveness that is available in Christ.

If everyone really knew the great things God has for us in this life and in the life to come, people would be lining up to take advantage of it all.
The devil and our world works overtime to hide the hope we can have in God, and the glory of the inheritance He has for us.  We may work hard to bring lost souls to Christ, but let's also pray that the eyes of their hearts may be enlightened to see the truth too.

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indlgence.  Matthew 23:25

Would you let someone continually wash your dishes if they only washed the outside of the cup and dish, but left the inside full of old dried caked on food? Well you might say, it looks good on the shelf, but don't use it for anything but show.  The religious leaders of Jesus' day were all show and no go.  When we use the Pharisees as our mold, we too will be all show and no go.  If we insist on our insides being full of sin and self-indulgence, Jesus will leave us on the shelf too.  May our outsides reflect our true cleanliness through and through

Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 3:13-14

A man had an argument with his wife and she got historical on him. You mean hysterical?  No, historical.  She brought up everything he had ever done wrong.  It is easy to be confused in the present, guilty for the past, and see the future as very dim.  The apostle Paul could have looked back with regret, but instead he forgot about it and reached for the prize in Christ.   Let's not  let people get historical on us.  May we all show the new person in us as we press on toward the goal in Christ.

Can we know we have eternal life?  We've always been taught that we can only hope we have it, but not know it.  When we count on our own righteous living, indeed all we can do it hope for the best.  When we allow Christ's righteousness to make us righteous, we can know His righteousness will overcome our sins.  We are saved by His life.  That's why it is called good news.  Know it and give God the glory

For I am afraid that perhaps when I come I may find you to be not what I wish, and may be found by you to be not what you wish; perhaps there will be strife, jealousy, angry tempers, disputes, slanders, gossip, arrogance, disturbances;  II Corinthians 12:20

Someday we will all stand before God to give account about our lives. When that day comes, will we be all we wanted to be?  More importantly, will we be all God wanted us to be?  Everyone who is successful in this world has preparation and performance goals.  Could we list any spiritual preparation and performance goals we are following?  Let's remove anything that stops us from meeting our spiritual goals starting right now.

A bruised reed He will not break. And a dimly burning wick He will not extinquish;  He will faithfully bring forth justice.  Isaiah  42:3

It is the nature of man to devalue people who we think are useless. It seems to give us license to abuse and eliminate those who are worth nothing to us.  God is not like that.  A bruised reed or a dim burning wick would be broken and snuffed out by most, but not by God.  We should be thankful that God is not like that.  God sees value in every living soul and does what is right.  If God is that way, shouldn't we be that way too?

Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles;  Proverbs 24:17

We might say it is "human nature", to be happy when our enemy stumbles and falls, but it is not God's nature.  Even though vengeance belongs to God, He is not willing that any should perish but all would come to repentance.  The Lord doesn't like our "human nature" and it will cause Him to turn His anger away from them, but not us.  Let's learn to love our unruly neighbors.

When the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, "Why is your Teacher eating with tax collectors and sinners?"  Matthew 9:11

The Pharisees felt that their mission was to represent God on the earth. They reckoned themselves to be righteous and did not wish to be infected by the sinful people around them.  Jesus the only truly righteous one, loved to be around people in need.  Like a physician is drawn to sick people in need, Jesus was drawn to sinners in need.
Sometimes our church buildings become sanctuaries for saints, instead of hospitals for sinners.  Which reputation do we prefer?  It is a shame to worship with sinners, or our mission to do so?

Son of man, I have appointed you a watchman to the house of Israel; whenever you hear a word from My mouth, warn them from Me.  Ezekiel  3:17

Jerusalem and Judea were on the brink of destruction.  The Babylonians were threatening and would soon attack.  God revealed to Ezekiel the strength of the enemy and the vulnerability of His people. His job was to watch, warn, and prepare.  His life depended on it.  We are somewhat like Ezekiel.  We have been appointed watchmen on the wall.  We also are commissioned to watch, warn, and prepare.  The stronger our enemies get, the more important our task becomes. The devil is getting stronger, are we?  Are we standing on the promises, or sleeping on the premises?

Now I exhort you brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment.  I Corinthians 1:10

Once in an African village, a pig died and fell into a stream.  Everyone upstream from the pig were well, but everyone downstream were always sick.  The dead pig was poisoning the water, but because it was submerged, no one could see it.  Why are there divisions in the body of Christ?  Something or somebody has poisoned our water supply.  It seems we are all drinking from the same water, but false teachers have changed things.  Our water supply defines us.  Let's get the "dead pig" our of our stream, enjoy the pure living water of Jesus, and unity will soon follow.

Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments; but rather by means of good works, as befits a women making a claim to godliness.  II Timothy 2:9-10

What is proper to wear when assembling for church services? Traditionally we have been taught to wear our very best, but there may be a higher priority.  Scripture calls for proper, modest, and discreet, not flashy and high priced.  The real thing we should want to be noticed for is good works and godliness, not our latest fashion conquest.  If we think better of those who look rich, we're thinking about the wrong things.

Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.  Proverbs 27:17

God has a plan to keep us sharp and ready for use.  The plan is stay together, work together, and keep each other sharp.  Are we hanging in the shed, gathering dust, and rusting?  When we get together we can knock the rust off, sharpen our tools, and quit gathering dust. Whether we are spending time with our Christian brothers or working with those in the world, the result is the same.  Look sharp, be sharp, and stay sharp.  Let's get back in the game.

Right hand in the sign of strength in scripture.  His hand in our hand brings us ultimate strength.

What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it.  Luke 15:4

Remember the nursery rhyme, "Little boy peep has lost her sheep and doesn't know where to find them.  Leave them alone and they'll come home wagging their tails behind them."  Cute but not true.  Sheep cannot find their way alone, nor can they defend themselves.  That is why sheep need a shepherd, and why Jesus is portrayed as our good shepherd.  The good shepherd who will come looking for us.  If your church is employing the "Little Bo Peep" plan of evangelism, don't wait up.

Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as you have: for He has said, I will never leave  you, nor forsake you.  Hebrews 13:5

Coveting is the desire for anything wrongfully, without due regard for the rights of others.  When we talk about such desires, we show our lack of content of what God has given us.  Technically, our conversation is conspiracy to covet, and as bad as coveting itself.  Thou shalt not covet is the 10th commandment.  If you think about it, it is the cause of  breaking all the other commandments, and seldom remembered.  Let's trust in God's promises.

Preach the word, be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.   II Timothy 4:2

Did you ever go out in the morning looking for someone to rebuke, criticize, and run down?  Hold that thought a minute.  Rebuking alone doesn't help anyone, and drives people to despair. God has a better way when someone needs correction.  Use the Word to reprove, or set God's standard.  Then show how far we have fallen from the standard, and finally offer a path of encouragement or improvement.  Mix in a little patience, and you create a great opportunity to do good.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.  Matthew 6:11-12
We all certainly need to have enough spiritual sense to pray and thank God for our daily bread and for forgiveness from our sins each and every day.  Jesus taught us to do that, but He also added that we should pray for those we need to forgive.  Next time we pray, let's slip in a prayer for those we have not forgiven.  God has blessings for us we can't even imagine.

You are the light of the world.  A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  Matthew 5:`4-15

When a bad storm is rolling in, and I fear we might lose power, I prepare. I find the candles and matches before I'm stumbling around in the dark. Then I position them up high to spread the most light.  The world's power is already out, and people are stumbling in the dark. Jesus has appointed us the lights of the world.  A light not to be  hidden but up on a lamp stand to shine.  Let's get prepared now.

The preacher search committee asked the applicant to tell his favorite Bible study in his own words.  He stood and said,

"The Good Samaritan was man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, who went down to Jericho at night.  He fell among the thorns and they choked him half to death, and he said, What shall I do?  I will arise and go to my father.  And he arose and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see who was to pass that way. And his hair got caught in a limb of the tree and he hung there for forty days and forty nights, and the raven came and fed him.  Delilah came by with her sheers and snipped off his hair and some it fell on stony ground.  Elijah came by and took him down to Jericho and Jezebel was sitting on the wall and he said, Chuck her down boys.  And they said how many times shall we chuck her down, until seven times?  And he said, Nay, until seventy times seven.  And so they chucked her down and she burst in their midst.  Then they picked up 12 baskets of the fragments that remained.  And whose wife shall she be in the resurrection?"

The committee all agreed that he wasn't much to look at, but he sure knew his Bible.  :)

The Lord spoke to Aaron saying, "Do not drink wine or strong drink, neither you nor your sons with you, when you come into the tent of meeting   Leviticus  10:9

The Old Testament Priests were commissioned to make distinction between holy and profane, clean and unclean, and teach the people. God wanted them to be good examples and get it right, and therefore avoid wine and strong drink.  I Peter 2:9 tells us that in the New Covenant of Christ, we are all priests.  We are called to proclaim the excellencies and light of Christ.  Our tent of meeting is never closed. We're on duty all the time.  Let's watch our behavior.  Everyone else is watching.

And he answered and said to him, Let it alone, sire, for this year too, until I dig around it and put in fertilizer; and if it bears fruit next year, fine; but if not, cut it down.  Luke 13:8-9

This is a great parable from the vineyard. A fig tree is just taking up space and the owner calls for it to be cut down.  The vineyard keeper steps in and begs for one more chance, that with a little extra effort the tree might be saved.  We are in the vineyard of the Lord to bear fruit for Him.  We risk destruction by lack of productivity.  Jesus begs for one more chance, and a little better effort to help us.  Thank you Jesus for being our advocate with the Father.

My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, not faint when you are reproved by Him; For those whom the Lord loves He disciplines.  Hebrew 12:5-6
Discipline from the Lord is a sign from Him of love and caring.  His correction comes from love and in the long run it is best for all of us. As we grow up in Christ, His discipline is necessary.  It may not seem joyful at the moment, but if we accept it, learn from it, and don't faint. it will pay off.  Our Father really does know best.

Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:15

I heard a southern gospel song today that spoke to me.  The lyrics were, "Your walk talks, and  your talk talks,  but your walk talks louder than your talk talks."  In other words, I can't hear what your saying because of the way you live. Before we can teach the world to live godly lives, we need to be living it ourselves.  Let's  be very careful.

According to my earnest expectation and hope, that I will not be put to shame in anything, but that with all boldness, Christ will even now, as always, be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.  Philippians 1:20

Earnest expectation and hope is much more than just a "pipe dream." Paul's plan was to exalt Christ in life and even after his death.  Did it work for him?  Yes.  His writings and the results of his conversions still live on 2000 years later.  When we dedicate ourselves to exalting Him in our lives, our influence can and will live on in the lives of others too.  As Elisha's bones brought the dead man to life, our spirit and our words can give life long after we are gone.  Our forever plan needs to start now.

And the day of one's death is better than the day of one's birth.  It is better to go into house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, because that is the end of every man, and the living take it to heart.  Ecclesiastes 7:1-2

This is just exactly the opposite of what the world would think.  To the believer, the day we are born there are many uncertainties about the life before us, but the day we die we have the assurance of where we are going and the blessing that will come.  We will never learn these things while we are feasting.  Mourning brings room for insights of the things that are really, important.  Jesus said, "Blessed are those who mourn." and that is what He meant.

As they were burying a man, behold, they saw a marauding band, and they cast the man into the grave of Elisha.  And when the man touched the bones of Elisha he revived and stood up on his feet.  II Kings 13:21

God anointed His prophets with power so the people would see the power of God.  Elisha asked for a double portion of the Spirit when Elijah went to heaven in a chariot of fire, l and I guess he got it.  This miracle was a reminder to all that the Spirit of God lived on.   May it be a reminder to us that the Holy Spirit lives on today.  The empty grave of Jesus is our grace.  Let's walk after His Spirit.

But we had to celebrate and rejoice, for this brother of yours was dead and has begun to live,  and was lost and has been found.
Luke 15:32

In this chapter they celebrated finding a lost animal, and a finding a lost coin. Should they have less compassion and rejoicing in finding a lost soul?  What kind of world would it be if we cared more for our animals and our money than we cared about lost souls?  Maybe it is time we realized that we are living in that kind of world.  Could the change start with us?

You shall thus consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim a release through the land to all its inhabitants.  It shall be a jubilee for you, and each of you shall return to his own property, and each of you shall return to his family.  Leviticus 25:10

God loves His people and always had a plan to release captives, restore freedom to the oppressed, and to show the His favor to His people.  In the old covenant, it was planned to take place every 50 years.  It was year of the Jubilee, setting everything right.  It was a picture of our eternal Jubilee that came in Jesus, as He revealed in Luke 4:16-18.  The Old Testament people forgot their Jubilee. We don't have to wait fifty years.  Ours is available every day.

If I say, "Surely the darness will overwhelm me, and the light around me will be night, even the darkness is not dark to  You, and the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to You.  Psalm 133:11-12

How many people have thought if they sin in the darkness, away from God's sight, they will get away with it?  While it is true that many rebellious people use the cover of darkness for sin, it doesn't work. God's vision is the same in the darkness and light.  We are far better off if we realize that God knows all and sees all, and conduct ourselves accordingly.

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity.  Psalm 133:1

The good and pleasant fellowship was accomplished in their visit to the temple.  It was good and pleasant not just because they were in the same place.  These are the Ascent Psalms.  They sang them as they traveled to Jerusalem.  It was a difficult journey, but was fulfilled together with purpose, and commitment.  Often today, we sit in  our pew wondering why good and pleasant fellowship eludes us.  When we plan together, work together, suffer together, commit together, and accomplish together, we will find a fellowship we all can enjoy.

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.  Romans 15:13

The apostle Paul is bringing his letter to a conclusion with this wish for us all.  That God would fill us with joy, peace, and hope.  Everyone wants those things, but they are not like pulling a rabbit out of a hat. His letter told us how to have a right standing before God, and how to live a renewed transformed life.  When we are in Christ and walking after the Spirit, as believers, God will fill us with joy, peace, and hope.  The power of the Holy Spirit is the only sure supplier of the things we desire. Let's not leave these things to chance.  Hope in God.

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap.   Galatians 6:7

This is both a natural law and a spiritual law.  We sow corn, we reap corn, We sow wild oats, we harvest wild oats.  We sow to our own flesh, we will reap corruption.  When we sow to the Spirit,, we will from the Spirit reap eternal life.  Some say we should "sow our wild oats, then pray for a crop failure"  It is better we should pray first to sow lives of the Spirit, and pray for a great harvest instead.

Were they ashamed because of the abomination they have done? They were not even ashamed at all;  They did not even know how to blush, therefore they shall fall among those who fall.  Jeremiah 6:15

The Prophet Jeremiah was trying to save God's people.  He preached trying to get them to repent, but failed.  Why?  Before anyone can be brought to repentance, we must have a godly sorrow.  These people were not ashamed, they were not sorry, and they didn't even know how to blush.  This can happen to us as well.  When we get so deep in sin without reference to righteousness, our conscience no longer works. Let's all ask God to give us a tender heart, so we won't be so hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

Can a man take fire in his bosom and his clothes not be burned? Or can a man walk on hot coals and his feet not be scorched?   Proverbs 6:27-28

This passage is asked in connection with adultery, but it most certainly applies to any sin that  "burns" us.  The devil wants to make us believe that we are ten feet tall, bullet proof, and wear asbestos underwear.  In other words, he wants us to think we can get away with anything. Really, the smell of burning clothes and flesh are obvious to everyone. Even the smell of smoke is apparent.  Let's not be deceived by the "keeper of the fires."  Step back.

But go, tell His disciples and Peter, He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told  you.  Mark 16:7

It had been a bad night for Peter.  He denied Jesus three times and deserted Him in His time of need.  Now Jesus is missing.  Peter separated himself and wept bitterly.  Perhaps he thought he had forfeited his apostleship, and God knew he would need a special invitation.  Thankfully, he was listening for his name.  Maybe we have felt like Peter now and then.  In our sorrow, we need to remember God's grace, and be close enough to hear our name called.  He is calling.  Are we somewhere listening for our name?

But an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip saying, "Get up and go south to the road that descends from Jerusalem to Gaza."  Acts 8:26

The message of the angel was for Philip to go see a man from Ethiopia who was traveling.   At the end of this story, the Ethiopian who connects with Philip, hears of Jesus, believes, and is baptized.  This is just one of many examples where God equips people to spread the good news. Even Jesus sent Saul to be taught by Ananias. The example seems to be clear.  God has chosen people to spread the good news of Jesus.  Jesus, angels, and the Holy Spirit, stand ready to equip us for the task, but not to do it for us.

From that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, "He told me all the things that I have done."  John 4:39

At the beginning of her day, she was a despised adulteress, sinful woman, separated from her community.  By the end of the day, she had led more people to Jesus than all the apostles put together. How, we might ask?  She opened her life to Jesus, He changed her, and she shared that testimony with others.  Do we want to make a difference in our world, but have a bad track record?  Turning that negative into a positive is as easy as 1-2-3.  Open our lives to Jesus, let Him change us, and share that testimony with others.

Amos saw a vision of locusts and fire on Israel that would consume them. He pleaded for them and the Lord changed His mind. There is an old gospel hymn, "Rescue the perishing."  One verse calls for us to "weep o'er the erring one, and lift up the fallen." As prophets and priests of God, He calls us all to rescue and restore the fallen.  Two things I wish for all of us today.  That we are praying for someone, and someone is praying for us.

And when your children say to you, "What does this rite mean to you?"  Exodus 12:26   Joshua 4:6

One of the priorities of God's people is to pass our faith on to the next generation.  When a remembrance is established, it is to help everyone remember God's provision, and pass it on. Unfortunately, the children won't ask about something they never see practiced.  When we forget, the children won't ask.  From the passage through the Red Sea to our redemption in Jesus Christ, the more we practice, the more we talk about it, the more others will ask.  What kind of questions are we generating about God's faithfulness?

I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored and you have entered into their labor.  John 4:38

In the farming community, when the crops are in the field and the one who planted cannot reap, family, friends, and neighbors pitch in. Nobody wants to see the crop die in the field and see all that has been invested wasted. Jesus uses this example for us.  The kingdom has been planted, the seeds of generations have been sown.  It is our turn to step up and be a part of a great harvest.  People need the Lord. May we not let them die in the field on our watch.

So they went on their way from the presence of the Council, rejoicing that they had been considered worth to suffer shame for His name.  Acts 5:41

Suffering and persecution seems to have been the fuel of the faithful in the first century.  The more people tried to stop them, the better they got.  We seem to be filling our tanks with ease and prosperity.   We must think if they world sees our health and wealth, they will want come right in.  Is that working for us? Our evangelism engines have come to a halt.  When we get out into the world, and suffer shame for His name, that's the boldness that draw souls to Christ.

Then the Lord said, "You had compassion on the plant for which you did not work and which you did not cause to grow, which came up overnight and perished overnight.  Jonah 4:10

If there was a another chapter of Jonah, do you think he got bitter or better ?  He already had shown that he loved plants more than people; even more than doing God's will.  Jonah wasn't concerned about 120,000 lost souls, but he really loved that plant.  I'd like to think this comparison got through to him, and he went back to Israel a better man. A prophet ready to help his people.  How about our concerns? Choosing between pets, plants, and people, do people finish a distant third? Let's start changing our preferences to line up with God's priorities.  Jesus 1st, Others 2nd, Yourself last.  That's how to put real J-O-Y in our lives.

It is not what we read but what we remember that makes us learned;
And it is not what we profess but what we practice that make us Christians!  How do we find the way to peace?  Practice, practice, practice.

Grace for your spirit
For I was ashamed to request from the king troops and horsemen to protect us from the enemy on the way, because we had said to the king, "The hand of our God is favorably disposed to all those who seek Him, but His power and His anger are against all those who forsake Him."  Ezra 8:22

Ezra faced a thousand mile journey leading the people back to Israel. Many obstacles would be faced on the trip.  He had a king who was ready willing and able to help them, but first He would ask God to keep His promises.  He went to God first.  God opened the doors and paved the way, and got the glory.  When we walk in the will of God, He promises to open the doors and pave the way for us too.  We should be ashamed to ask the world and the government to bail us out before the have asked God.  Can we trust in Him or will we be ashamed? Let's give Him the glory.

Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe.    I Timothy 4:12

In the next few verses God gives us a list of things that will keep us faithful, and keep us being a good example.
1)Give attention to public reading of Scripture, exhorting, and teaching.
2)Do not neglect spiritual gifts we have.
3)Take pains and be absorbed and show your progress to all
4)Pay close attention and persevere.
Do this to ensure salvation for yourself and those who hear you.
When someone wants an example of a believer, may they see it in us

Then they burned the house of God and broke down the wall of Jerusalem, and burned all its fortified buildings with fire and destroyed all its valuable articles.  II Chronicles  36:19

When Jerusalem was conquered by Babylon, in one sweep the work of Moses, Joshua, David, Solomon, and all the faithful in between were destroyed.   Moses freed them from bondage, Joshua conquered the land, David established a kingdom, and Solomon built the temple. All this was gone due to the unfaithfulness of God's people. Are we destroying or building up the church we have received?  Let's not let the small things become the big things that tear us down.  Let's be faithful in all we do.

But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them.   Hebrews 11:16

We don't see much talk about a heavenly home in the Old Testament. It seemed all of their focus on was their earthly promised land. However, those who had great faith in God understood that they were strangers on this earth, and desired a heavenly home where they could be with God.  They knew the heart of God and God prepared a place for all who are near to His heart.  When we begin to understand God, we will take our eyes off our worldly pursuits, and seek the eternal city that He has prepared for us in heaven too.

The seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with worries and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity.  Luke 8:14

The seed pictured in these parables is the Word of God.  When it grows among thorns it can be choked off easily. The thorns are the weeds of worry, riches, and pleasures.  Most of our lives will never be blessed with no weeds.  Most of us will have seeds and weeds.  Our seed is not destined to fail because we have weeds.  We need to recognize our thorn problem and make a special effort to thrive.  Let's not give up because our soil isn't everything we always wanted. Instead, let's have strong resolved to nurture the seed over the weed. God can give us victory, and make us fruitful.

You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God?  Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.  James 4:4

Physical adultery is being sexually involved with another while we are married. It is simple, condemned in the Bible, and yet more and more accepted everyday.  Spiritually adultery is being friends of the world, while we pretend to be joined with Christ.  That is simple, condemned in the Bible, and yet more and more accepted everyday too.  We cannot be BFF's (best friends forever) with the world and Jesus at the same time.  Let's choose today whom we will serve, and make it God. If we can't make a clear choice, we will become an enemy of God.
